With the help of volunteers, we aim to set up and facilitate (for up to 12 months per group), small social groups for older carers across Lambeth and the South West London, to provide emotional support, friendship, information and signposting.
Joining a group
Any unpaid Carers aged 65 or over, can join a group. They aim to be local, take place in a variety of locations. They will typically take place in a coffee shop or other social environment, near public transport, for about 1 hour and will be small and informal. Carers don’t need to commit to coming regularly and it doesn’t matter who you are caring for. Those that have recently finished their caring role, in the last 6 months, are also welcome to attend. Initially they will be led by the project lead or volunteer facilitator, with the aim that eventually the group will share the leading and facilitation duties between the members, with support from Project.
“Since knowing the group, I feel better in myself. I’m not on my own any more. It’s another richness in my life, another window on other people’s lives. I feel good being in this group. Between the meetings, I think about the people in the group and I connect with their faces. There are people who have to deal with much more than I do – it puts things in perspective…I feel connected and not on my own.” Mustafa – Brixton Group
Are you an organisation or person that would like to support the project? If so, please get in touch!! Partners are really important to this project, as they help me to discover and engage with hidden carers. If you are a care home, or live on a large residential estate I would be particularly keen to hear from you on the details below.
You can self-refer to the project, or just come and try a group out. Alternatively if you are a professional and you would like to refer a client, please simply get in touch with me on the details below. Please include in your email: their name, address, who they care for and the illness/disability if possible and their contact details such as a telephone or email address. I will then make contact to talk to them about the groups.
